☓ Name: Rose Red
☓ Series: Fables
☓ Reference: The story of Snow White and Rose Red and a Wiki.
At the end of the story of Snow White and Rose Red, Snow White is engaged to be married to the prince. Their mother, it turned out, had a deal with the king of the land, who did not want his son to marry the child of a witch (as their mother turned out to be). In order to solve the dilemma without breaking the engagement, Snow White’s mother agreed to kill her daughter. In reality she only sent the girl away to another kingdom, but she had to keep up the ruse. She told Rose Red that her sister had died, and Rose was distraught. For the rest of her childhood Rose became quiet, and was left alone even by the wild animals of the forest.
Years later, when the cruel king was dead and Snow White was safe, the two were reunited. Snow White was able to remember her early childhood and send for her sister after she was married to the infamous Prince Charming. Rose Red was completely devastated to discover that not only had her mother lied to her and was her sister alive, but Snow White had whiled away the years of their absence as a princess living in the lap of luxury and never thought twice about her poor sister, to whom she had promised they would never be separated. This was when Rose’s party girl life began.
In order to get back at her sister for her years of despair, Rose began flirting with every eligible male in the kingdom, starting fights and generally making a mess of things. This was when she learned to be manipulative and cruel, and it continued long into their adult lives until a spirit disguised as Rose’s mother was able to convey the whole story (including the many misfortunes that caused Snow to forget her childhood for a time) to Rose and convince her to make things right.
☓ Canon point: The End of #75: The long battle with the Adversary is over, and Rose has married Sinbad, as much out of boredom as adoration for his heroics in the war.
☓ Age: She is eternally twenty-something. In mundy years she is around 200 years old, if not older.
☓ Previous TDS memories? N/A
☓ Personality:
When we are first introduced to the character of Rose Red, she has faked her own death. In all her life, Rose has a fantastic flare for the dramatic. When someone she loves dies, Rose does not simply mourn. She fades into nothing, lying in bed all day, refusing to interact with people, and generally putting herself into a depressed stupor until something is able to pull her out of it. In the case of her sister’s disappearance, her rage and jealousy was enough to spur her into action. When Boy Blue was killed, it took motivation of an equally personal nature. In the end, Rose’s heart leads her life far more than her head could ever hope to.
When the stakes are highest, Rose reacts in the extreme. In the revolution at the Farm, she goes full-on pirate double-crossing secret agent in a maneuver that amazingly enough, actually works to lure the revolutionaries into a position where they can be taken down by reinforcements. Her action plans tend to be effective and creative, if only because she is the only one crazy enough to try them. She is not the most skilled fighter, but she is willing to try and put all of her energy into the effort.
Rose is deeply emotional, and despite all pretense and sordid history, she cares deeply about her sister. Even in the midst of jealousy and bitterness, she is willing to put her own safety at risk to ensure Snow’s survival. Snow’s emotional state, on the other hand, is open game for most of Rose’s life. She holds a deep grudge and does not forgive easily. She can be incredibly cruel and calculating when it comes to hurting people who have wronged her, imagined or real.
When it comes to personal values, her grudge against Snow puts Rose on a level playing field. She believes in fairness and sticks to this belief in governing the Farm, but it is also the motivating factor in her long-standing grudge against her sister. One broken promise is enough to condemn Snow for centuries, even though she knows that isn’t fair. Her feelings are still hurt, and that is enough for Rose for quite some time. In fact when her feelings are hurt, nothing else seems to matter, and everyone else is fair game.
As a party girl, Rose can drink, smoke, and have ill-advised sex with the best of them. But the real reason she is so successful in her attempts to talk every man between here and the sun into her bed is because she is really quite charismatic and friendly. When she means it, Rose can build bonds that turn to a deep trust, even if the end result isn’t true friendship. She knows how to use half-truths and sincerity to avoid upsetting people when she doesn’t want to. Even if the Fables on the Farm don’t agree with everything she does, Rose is very likeable and fair, and has earned their trust and grudging affection.
In a good mood Rose is playful, fun, and great with kids. She takes care of her nieces sternly but kindly, earning their affection as well as their respect. The same can be said of most of her true friends – they respect her authority over the Farm without question and without bias, but know that they can rely on her to tell them the truth and be there when they need her. And, with the exception of her time spent in mourning, Rose is there for her friends when they need her.
☓ Abilities:
Rose Red has no special abilities apart from her nature as a Fable. She is naturally a magical creature, but this only translates to de facto immortality and a great capacity for healing. She is not a terribly popular Fable, and as such could likely not survive a bullet to the head like her sister Snow White, but is still fairly difficult to kill. Otherwise she has no notable powers.
☓ Intranet post sample:
[ When Rose gets around to gather folks together, she starts with a video post. It seems the most effective way to reach everyone when they’re so hard to get to gather. The video is fuzzy and the sound quality isn’t great, but you can hear and see her. ]
You lot are the least organized stranded island survivors I have ever seen. [ And she’s off to a good start! Insulting those she already considers her people. ]
Nobody else seems to want to, so I’m going to get you folks organized. [ It’s something she’s good at, she’s found, and if she’s going to be stuck here she may as well make herself comfortable. She faces the screen with a look like steel. She’s in full on speech mode. ] I want each and every one of you to meet with me, as soon as you’re able. You’re going to have to work. It needs to be done and it’s not like you have much better to do. You help out, you get fed. You don’t want to help out, or you don’t need feeding, I still want to meet you. We’re going to have to work together, whether you like it or not.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here just to order you around and get my jollies from being the big boss lady. We’re going to make this place safer, better. And we’re going to make our supplies last, too. And eventually we’ll all get out of here.
[ Finally she breaks a slight smile, pointing at the screen like a scolding mother – or more like a goofy teen impersonating a scolding mother. ]
Come on now, I don’t bite. Not unless you ask me to. [ She grins. ] But I will come looking for you if I have to.
The name’s Rose Red, and I’m in charge of this place now. My office is temporarily in the hospital, first floor, third door on the right down the left hallway. I’ll let you know when that changes.
Rose, over and out.

☓ Log post sample:
Rose spat as she dragged herself from the freezing water. Her mouth tasted like salty piss and vomit. Not, she thought to herself, that she would know what salty piss tasted like. She shivered violently and wrapped her arms around herself as she looked around.
Where the fuck was she? The Mundy? The Homeworlds? One wasn’t generally picked up out of the air in one part of the Mundy world and dropped into another, but with the war just ended you never could tell. If she was in one of the homeworlds she didn’t recognize it. She wouldn’t be able to figure it out standing around on the beach, that was for sure. She rang as much water as she could from her hair and clothes before taking to the trail that was visible from the shore.
It wasn’t a pleasant place she had landed. There were portals all over the Homeworlds and Mundy that her sister or Bigby (or even her recent husband, if he cared to) could pass over to come looking for her. Who would take care of the Farm while she was gone? She shook the concern from her head. Snow would figure it out. She always did.
“Hey,” she shouted as she neared what appeared to be a run-down little town. This was really a shithole. “Anybody there? Anybody got a towel?” First things first, of course. She wasn’t sure if she could survive hypothermia, and she didn’t want to find out. Of course, Snow would be just fine. Why couldn’t it be her that got dumped on a strange shore? She didn’t feel as bad as she maybe should have wishing this fate on her sister. Snow could survive anything. People believed in Snow White. They knew who she was and they cared. Nobody remembered Rose Red. Us against the world indeed. She huffed, and was annoyed to find her breath created a bit of fog in the air.
“It’s fucking freezing,” she informed the town, if anyone cared to listen.
